Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate preparations. Active knee joint
infection or skin disease at injection site.
Overview
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and is a major cause
of debilitation for affected individuals. One of the nonsurgical options for
the symptomatic management of OA is intra-articular syringe of hyaluronic
acid (HA), also referred to as viscosupplementation. A number of HA products,
with distinct compositions, are available for the treatment of knee OA. These
products are differentiated by their source of HA and method of production;
the MW of the active ingredient; the amount, concentration, and injection
volume per dose; and the number of syringe per course of therapy, ranging
from a single administration to up to 5 weekly intra-articular syringe.
As per the studies, non-animal stabilized HA is effective in reducing pain and
improving function in patients with noninflammatory, mild-to-moderate knee OA.
